Activity Report

Nigeria was featured at the 7th Africa Fair.

2024.6.18

As a part of the "Inter-University Exchange Project" adopted by MEXT in 2020, the 7th Africa Fair was held on Thursday, May 30, 2024.

The presenter this time is Bala Ningi Umar, a first-year PhD student who recently entered the Joint Graduate School of Veterinary Medicine, Yamaguchi University from Nigeria in April. The country has a population and economy so large that it has been described as a ‘Giant of Africa’, but what first surprised us was its ‘diversity’.

Nigeria has 371 tribes and more than 500 languages spoken, and the religious population is half Christian and half Muslim, making it a diverse country far beyond what we can imagine living in Japan, where there is almost a single ethnicity, language and religion. Even more notable is Nigeria's ‘Nollywood’. Not Hollywood, not Bollywood, but Nollywood. That is how famous the Nigerian film industry is.

The attendees listened to his presentation, which was full of Nigeria's attractions such as tourism, food culture, sports, Guinness World Record, celebrities, and more. The Q&A session was also a success, with many questions being asked, and the event was wrapped up in a Nigerian atmosphere.

The number of African students has increased from only 5 in 2020, when the project was adopted, to 23 in 2024, and the number of countries of origin in Africa has also increased from 5 to 10. Furthermore, the event now attracts a wide range of attendees, including students, faculty, staff, other university students, and African countries (online). We are planning to hold not only the Africa Fair but also various other Africa-related events this year.
