2023.8.8

On July 18th, the second International Cooperation Talk Show was held at the Open Room of the General Education Building in Yoshida Campus. This event was also distributed online, and there were about 20 students and faculty/staff members on-site, and 3 people from online.

This second time, we set the theme as “Tourism and SDGs.” The two speakers talked about the current situation in Africa and Asia from “Tourism” aspect.

The first speaker, Professor Asamizu Munehiko of the Faculty of Economics, gave a short lecture about the introduction of Tourism and SDGs. He explained the definition of Tourism (Kanko) and mass/alternative tourism, then introduced eco-villa, rice terraces café in Bali, and traditional farmer’s inn in Yamaguchi as examples of SDGs initiative in tourism sector. He also showed the data of the impact of the Covid-19 on the tourism market.

Next speaker was Mr. Tavares Borges Jorge from Cape Verde, a third-year doctor’s course student at the Graduate School of East Asian Studies. He talked about the geographical and historical background of Cape Verde, and how tourism has helped this country maintains a relatively high economic level among African countries. He gave an enjoyable lecture with many colorful photos.

In the question and answer session after each talk, participants raised various questions and it was lively.

We plan to hold this talk show series regularly, and the next one will be around October. Through this event, we would like to provide an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the African region and we hope this event leads to an increase in the momentum for promoting exchange with the African region both inside and outside the university. The lecture will be posted on the university website later.

  • In 2020, Yamaguchi university was selected for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology’s funding project, “Inter-University Exchange Project”, which supports the exchange with African countries. This talk show is held as part of this program.
