2023.10.27

From 4-15 September, four students in Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Nairobi participated in a two-week practical training in Joint Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Yamaguchi University (FVM, YU).

During the first week, the students took Japanese lessons and interact with Japanese students, using our language, on a bus tour organised by Japanese students. On Friday 8 September, they paid a courtesy call on the president of the university, where they introduced themselves in their newly-learnt Japanese and gave their impressions of their stay in Yamaguchi. Other off-campus training was also conducted with the cooperation of Akiyoshidai Safari Land and the Miyajima Aquarium in Hiroshima.

During the second week, the students attended a six-day Comprehensive Practice of Infectious Diseases Control together with fourth-year students in FVM, YU. This course includes practical training with pathogens in the BSL-2 laboratory, practical training on how to diagnose rabies and anthrax outbreaks, Hans-on training in the BSL-3 laboratory and the integrated Pathogen Diagnostic Laboratory (iPADL).

On the final day, all students received a certificate of completion of Comprehensive Practice of Infectious Diseases Control from the Dean of the Faculty.

The Kenyan students were happy to see the Japanese students who had exchanged in Nairobi last year, and started a new interaction with other students as well. We hope that this experience will not only promote exchange between the two universities, but also help the students learn from a global perspective.
