SSH Tokuyama High School Student Visit

On September 03, 2018, we welcomed two students from SSH Tokuyama High School who participated in the Self-Development Course from 10:30–12:00 and 13:00–14:30.

They wore a simple ECG measurement device (shown below) near the epigastric area to record their ECG. The ECG data was imported into a computer, and they experienced time-series analysis.
Measurements were conducted under two conditions: at rest and during a calculation task (psychological stress condition).

R-wave peaks were extracted from the ECG to generate R-R interval data, and power spectrum was computed by Fourier transformation. Due to time constraints, the computation was demonstrated.

High-frequency components reflecting respiratory variation appear in heart rate variability only when the parasympathetic nervous system is activated, while low-frequency components appear in both sympathetic and parasympathetic activation states. This knowledge enables estimation of autonomic nervous system activity.

We hope this experience inspires interest in medicine and research.
