*Announcement* Crowdfunding Goal Reached
Dr. Sano’s group at the Division of Advanced Genome Editing Therapy challenged crowdfunding.
The result was a great success, with support far exceeding our goal.
ーーー<Thank you for your cooperation.>ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
I am Dr. Motoaki Sano of the Second Department of Internal Medicine (Department of Organ Pathology), Yamaguchi University Hospital. Thanks to your support, the crowdfunding campaign we initiated to “extend the healthy longevity of Yamaguchi Prefecture” has received donations from 795 people totaling 18,258,000 yen during the activity period from January 20, 2024 to March 19, 2024. As one of the planners, I would like to express my sincere gratitude.
Stroke and cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of death among the elderly in later life, and also the most common cause of long-term care disease among those aged 65 and over. Furthermore, their treatment costs more than that of cancer. As Japan’s population ages, overcoming stroke and cardiovascular disease is an important issue for extending healthy life expectancy.
To this end, the “Five-Year Plan for Overcoming Stroke and Cardiovascular Disease” was formulated in 2016, and measures have been implemented according to the situation of each prefecture. Furthermore, in 2018, the “Basic Law on Measures against Cardiovascular Diseases” was enacted, and in 2025, the “Comprehensive Support Center for Stroke and Heart Disease” was established within Yamaguchi University Hospital.
However, the development of facilities alone will not lead to the realization of healthy longevity. Stroke and cardiovascular diseases are difficult to cure once they occur, and often leave residual aftereffects, so prevention is of the utmost importance. For this reason, it is necessary to properly manage risk factors such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, obesity/diabetes, and chronic kidney disease through “diet therapy,” “exercise therapy,” “behavioral therapy,” and “drug therapy.
Yamaguchi Prefecture, in particular, has the nation’s worst age-adjusted mortality rates for cerebrovascular and cardiac diseases, and the high rates of hypertension and dyslipidemia, as well as the low rate of health checkups. The purpose of this crowdfunding project was to make more people aware of these conditions and to encourage behavioral change.
Initially, the project name “Pin Shan Korori! Preventing Cardiovascular Disease and Supporting Rehabilitation in Yamaguchi Prefecture!” was a bit abstract, and it was difficult to convey the specific issues and initiatives involved, and the collection of donations did not grow as expected. However, as the medical staff of the Second Department of Internal Medicine traveled around the prefecture to explain directly, awareness of the health issues facing Yamaguchi Prefecture grew, and the circle of support steadily expanded.
Going forward, we will use your donations to actively promote activities to reduce the age-adjusted mortality rate of cerebrovascular and cardiac diseases in Yamaguchi Prefecture. We will report on the progress of our activities through our crowdfunding website and other means as appropriate.
We sincerely hope that you will continue to give us your warm support.
