Multiple Recombination Events between Endogenous Retroviral Elements and Feline Leukemia Virus
A research team led by Professor Kazuo Nishigaki at Yamaguchi University has elucidated the mechanism by which ancient retroviruses remaining within genes are reactivated when modern retroviruses infect domestic cats, leading to the emergence of new pathogenic viruses.
Similar to “endogenous retroviruses (ERVs)” which comprise about 8% of the human genome, ancient retroviral gene sequences also exist within the genome of domestic cats. These ancient viruses are typically suppressed and non-pathogenic. However, the study revealed that when domestic cats are infected with feline leukemia virus (FeLV), a retroviral infection, recombination with ERVs can generate new viruses capable of causing lymphoma and leukemia. This suggests that ancient viral records can regain pathogenicity triggered by modern viral infections.
