Frailty in COPD Patients Linked to 2.6-Fold Increase in Cardiovascular Risk: A 10-Year Long-Term Study

A research group at Yamaguchi University has demonstrated a strong correlation between the degree of “frailty” (a state of declined physical and cognitive function) and the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), such as myocardial infarction, heart failure, and stroke, in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Using a 10-year follow-up study based on a regional electronic health record network in Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, the study revealed that higher frailty severity significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular events. Notably, the risk in the “severe frailty” group was approximately 2.6 times higher than that in the “non-frailty” group. These findings indicate that frailty assessment, in addition to respiratory function, is a critical indicator for the prognostic management of COPD patients.
